The focus of most trout hatcheries is producing trout for food processing. Live stocking is a secondary outlet. These trout are reared in large quantities in overcrowded, indoor holding cells, and are fed large amounts of growth hormones and antibiotics. This method deprives the trout of natural foods such as bugs and natural aquatics, making them ill-suited for fly-fishing. They also have undeveloped color displays because of lack of sunlight and natural food consumption during the rearing process.
When these hatchery-engineered fish are stocked in natural streams a large percentage of them die after a short time simply because they are not acclimated to the natural environment. Another prominent condition seen with fish raised in these conditions is fin rub. Due to the overcrowded conditions of concrete holding cells the fins do not develop properly because they are constantly being worn down from contact with the concrete and other fish. Because fin quality is so crucial to a trout’s fight capacity and endurance the typical fin rubbed hatchery trout cannot come close to the power and magnificence nature intended. Finally, the largest problem is the lack of attention paid to the diseases and parasites that can be transferred from one fish to another because of poor hatchery practices. Not enough is being done to address this huge problem responsible for wiping out wild and native trout streams. No wonder hatchery trout often have such a bad reputation. Yet, wild trout streams are a rarity – and often available only as public waters. But one man’s dedication to nature and business produced a trout rearing process which works with nature. For almost three decades Karl Brandt has been known for raising the finest quality world-class trout Time is one of the key ingredients in producing our highly sought after quality world-class trout. for the fly-fishing industry. The quest for the perfect fly-fishing trout has led Karl to a very different and effective process of rearing trout with all the fight and finesse of a wild trout and a little something extra called “Big Shoulders”. Our exclusive Native Way rearing process
focuses on the habitat of the wild trout. At four inches in length our trout leave the hatchery and are reared in streams and ponds that are natural, uncrowded, and fed by glacial Morain artesian spring water that is mineral rich. Fin quality is never compromised allowing for spectacular fight quality. Bugs and natural aquatics play a critical role in our trout’s development. We do not give our trout growth hormones nor do we regularly feed them antibiotics. They flourish on natural foods and natural sunlight which produces brilliant color displays and ensures excellent health.
Like a fine scotch using only the best quality ingredients means you’re obligated to not rush it. Many of our premium reserve trout
take three to seven years to reach our stringent quality standards. Only the healthiest and most vibrant trout can make it through the maturation process required to reach premium reserve trout
status. Less than 1% of approximately 500,000 trout make it to this elite status. This ensures only the finest quality of genetics for future trout. Finally, our hatchery (Brandt Trout Hatchery
) is a disease-free certified hatchery. This ensures we will have quality world-class trout
trout in the future. To preserve you must protect from disease.
